Growing up, I wasn’t academically inclined and my grades were abysmal. I didn’t know how to study and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I took a career aptitude test in Grade 12, and the top rank was a nurse, so I decided that must be what I was supposed to do. So off I went to college to become a nurse. Not surprisingly, my marks didn’t cut it and I was kicked out of the program after the first semester. I was devastated and believed I wasn’t smart enough for college or university.

Still unsure of what I should become, I took an administrative assistant course, and started my career as an administrative assistant in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. However, it never felt right. I struggled. I felt unhappy, stuck, and unfulfilled. I knew deep inside this was not my purpose in this life.

While still in the same position, a colleague said she was going to take a university course. I thought, if she does it, I’ll do one too. Surprisingly, I got an A-. I was shocked. If I was able to get this grade, it meant I wasn’t stupid. I went on to complete my undergraduate degree, but I still didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I knew, at some point, I wanted to complete a Master’s degree, but I didn’t know what to take.

After a serious health scare, contracting H1N1 and developing bi-lateral pneumonia in less than five days, I was hospitalized for a week and struggled with my health and immune system for a year. Along with feeling deeply dissatisfied with my 20+ years of administrative work, and getting some spiritual insight from my Reiki healer, I finally had my big aha moment. I was a counsellor. I was the person people had been coming to for most of my life to find comfort and support. I was the one people called calming and wise. This led me to complete my Master of Counselling Psychology degree at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA.

I am currently a psychologist and see clients in-person and online in Calgary, AB. If you are looking for therapy, check out my website at psychotherapycalgary.com. As a voracious learner, I’ve read and participated in several alternative healing practices and trainings over the last 35+ years.

  • I became a Reiki Master.

  • I became a Peruvian shamanic practitioner, and travelled to Peru to learn from shaman healers and participate in life-altering ceremonies.

  • I became a Theta Healing practitioner.

  • I participated in local indigenous teachings about the medicine wheel.

  • I learned about Buddhism and other Eastern philosophies.

  • I took several courses on plant medicine and chakras.

Spirituality and alternative forms of healing and medicine are a big part of my life and philosophy!
